My mind was turning somersaults as I made my way through the lobby to the door. The building itself seemed to be strangely quiet, as if it too was in mourning.

It was now fully dark as I exited into the almost empty parking lot. Then a distant shuffling and a flash of movement made me stop. At the far end of the lot, barely visible under the dim lights, I saw several figures huddled beneath the awning of a small storage shed. Something about their posture and their movements made me think they might be arguing. I slipped around the corner of the theater, where I could stay mostly hidden.

They were men—three men—but with the darkness and the distance, I couldn’t even tell if they were people that I knew. One of them, who had his back turned to me, pulled a small bag from his pocket and shoved it at another guy. He received a wad of bills in exchange, shoved them into his pocket, and walked quickly toward a white BMW Z4 parked underneath a light. It was then I recognized a stone-faced Pete Simons.

Shaken, I hurried to my car, locked the doors, and drove away. It seemed odd to feel unsafe at the Glove and Garter, not far from the heart of our precious town. But first there was the murder, and now this.

I was pretty sure I knew one person’s secret, but could dealing drugs be related to the gruesome drowning? Or was it just the reason that our handsome star preferred not to speak to cops?
